Award Overview

Each year, CRDF presents the George Brown Award for International Scientific Cooperation to recognize the late Congressman’s vision for international research cooperation and his important role in the efforts leading to CRDF’s creation. As a way to preserve Congressman Brown’s legacy, the award is presented to an individual for his or her critical work in advancing international cooperation in science and technology.

The CRDF George Brown Award for International Scientific Cooperation was first presented in 2005 to mark CRDF’s tenth anniversary. The 4th annual presentation of the award is tentatively scheduled for late September 2008 in Washington, DC. CRDF will accept nominations for prospective awardees until Friday, April 5, 2008.
 
Eligibility and Selection Criteria

The George Brown Award is open to any individual in the policy, business, science, research, or technology community who has contributed substantially to advancing international science and technology cooperation. Specific eligibility and selection criteria are:

  • Nominee has made significant advances in international scientific collaboration, including, but not limited to:
    Developing, significantly enhancing, or catalyzing new research collaborations or other S&T activities that achieve long-lasting or sustainable results.

    Facilitating cooperation between multiple countries or regions.

    Encouraging and engaging new entrants into science and engineering (e.g., students, junior scientists, underrepresented geographic areas, etc.)

  • Nominee has had a positive impact in one or more of CRDF mission areas, i.e., promoting high-quality research cooperation; capacity-building, nonproliferation and security, economic development, and education (Click here for a complete description of CRDF’s mission areas.)
The individual must be living at the time of nomination.  No current member of the CRDF Board of Directors, Advisory Council, or staff is eligible for nomination. Institutions and organizations are not eligible. The award is open to individuals irrespective of nationality or country of citizenship.

Nomination Procedures

Candidate nominations for the 2008 George Brown Award must include the following information to be considered: 

  • Nominator’s name, address, phone, and e-mail address

  • Nominee’s name, title, institution, address, phone number and e-mail address, if possible

  • Summary of extraordinary contributions to international cooperation in S&T that form the basis for the nomination (no more than two pages)

  • List of any distinguished awards or memberships demonstrating the nominee’s spirit of international scientific cooperation

  • Any attachments that further illustrate the significance of the nominee’s achievements (optional, but no more than five pages total)

Nomination Deadline: April 5, 2008.

Selection

Based on the eligibility and selection criteria above, CRDF will make a final decision on the award recipient by June 17, 2008. The award recipient must be available to travel to Washington, DC to receive the award at a presentation tentatively scheduled for late September 2008 (travel costs to be covered by CRDF). Award recipient must be willing to speak at the event, and participate in pre/post event ceremonies and activities. For more information, please contact Ashley Minney.
