I. Introduction and Scope
The U.S. Civilian Research & Development Foundation (CRDF) is currently accepting proposals for its Cooperative Grants Program (CGP). The primary goals of the Cooperative Grants Program are to support high-quality, innovative, basic and applied research and development by establishing sustainable U.S.-Eurasian research collaborations, provide an alternative to emigration for Eurasian scientists, and engage and employ former weapons research scientists in civilian research.
This program provides up to two years of support to joint research teams of U.S. and Eurasian scientists and engineers in all areas of basic and applied research and development. Proposals may be submitted for cooperation in any area of civilian research and development in the natural sciences, mathematics, and engineering. Proposals may include basic and applied science as well as engineering activities. Please see program announcement (download below) for full eligibility and submission requirements.
The CRDF is a private, nonprofit charitable organization created by the United States Government in 1995 to promote international scientific and technical collaboration. The CRDF receives funding for this program from the U.S. Department of State, the National Science Foundation, and the U.S. National Institutes of Health.
II. Program Guidelines
General
The maximum award size is $70,000 for up to two years of research and development. At least 80% of the funds awarded to each project must be used for the Eurasian team's expenses, including institutional support. No more than 20% may be used for U.S. team expenses. These funds will be allocated separately and administered directly to the individuals and institutions involved.
Eligibility
Each proposal submitted to the CGP must have one Eurasian Principal Investigator and one U.S. Principal Investigator, who share overall responsibility for the project in their respective countries, coordinating all project participants and institutions. See program announcement for full eligibility requirements.
Starting in 2007, due to program restructuring, the CGP competition will only be accepting proposals from researchers in Kazakhstan, Kyrgyz Republic, Russian Federation, Tajikistan, Turkmenistan, Ukraine, and Uzbekistan.
Researchers from Armenia, Azerbaijan, Georgia, and Moldova should contact the appropriate country’s CRDF counterpart organization regarding other funding opportunities. Applicants from Armenia, Azerbaijan, Georgia, and Moldova may serve as team members on projects from eligible countries.
