HIV/AIDS and related infections have spread across the globe at alarming rates over the last quarter-century. The growing rates of drug-resistant tuberculosis and fears over avian flu, SARS and West Nile virus present new challenges and greater urgency. Because these public health challenges know no boundaries, a collaborative approach is needed to find real solutions.
To meet the growing threat of drug-resistant tuberculisis, California-based SciClone Pharmaceuticals worked with a St. Petersburg, Russia-based institute on a treatment compound that could be taken orally—a more globally viable delivery method. Notably, this collaboration provided the two dozen former biological-weapons scientists with a real opportunity to transition their weapons expertise.
Since 1995, the U.S. Civilian Research and Development Foundation’s research grants and other project assistance have supported teams of scientists from the United States and Eurasian countries in basic and applied energy-related research topics, including projects that have studied solar energy, improved the potential and marketability of fuel cells, and explored sustainable energy.
The Democratic People's Republic of Korea has invited the U.S.-DPRK Scientific Engagement Consortium to visit Pyongyang in December 2009. The 7-person delegation representing the Consortium and headed by Nobel Laureate Peter Agre aims to facilitate and promote a series of academic research exchanges between both countries in areas of mutual interest.
