The State of the Arctic Conference

"At the Forefront of Global Change"
March 16, 2010 8:00 AM - March 19, 2010 5:00 PM
Location: Miami, Florida

Dr. Marianna Voevodskaya, the director of CRDF's Cooperative Programs/Science Liaison Office in Moscow, has been invited to participate in a capstone panel discussion for The State of the Arctic Conference: "At the Forefront of Global Change." The conference -- which will take place March 16-19, 2010 in Miami, Fla. -- will review our understanding of the arctic system in a time of rapid environmental change.

Conference topics will range from basic understanding of the Arctic and system-wide change to developing response strategies to adapt and mitigate change. The conference also will provide an opportunity for resource management and service agencies to link the most recent science findings to their objectives and priorities. All of the sessions have been designed to include human dimensions and social science research to ensure a balanced portfolio in conference talks and discussions.

The panel will address how national and international agencies can address an international research agenda over the long term. The panel follows three days of scientific presentations, and a morning session of plenary talks on Day 4. Dr. Voevodskaya is going to give a presentation prepared together with Professor Julie Brigham-Grette, a geoscientist from the University of Massachusetts at Amherst, on how CRDF's Cooperative Programs/Science Liaison Office in Moscow provided critical support for an international climate change project in remote northeast Russia.

As a milestone event conceived and developed by the Study of Environmental Arctic Change (SEARCH) and the Arctic System Science (ARCSS) Program communities, major funding for the conference will be provided by the National Science Foundation Division of Arctic Sciences. Several other national and international sponsors and partners are participating in conference planning and design.

The International Study of Arctic Change Science (ISAC) Steering Group is hosting Day 4, which is designed to focus on international co-operation in arctic research.

About the Cooperative Programs/Science Liaison Office

The Arctic Sciences Section of the National Science Foundation's (NSF) Office of Polar Programs (OPP) and the NSF Directorate for Geosciences (GEO), in partnership with the U.S. Civilian Research & Development Foundation (CRDF), have established a Cooperative Programs/Science Liaison Office in Moscow. This Office provides on-site support of OPP- and GEO-sponsored cooperative activities in Russia in Arctic research and the geosciences.

The Office makes available its office space and facilities (including personal computer, Internet connections, fax and photocopiers) to OPP and GEO staff and their grantees traveling in the region. Office staff is also available to assist visiting OPP and GEO staff and their grantees with logistical support for scheduling meetings, site visits, and so forth. Costs associated with transportation, interpretation services, hotels, and meals are the responsibility of the traveler or his/her organization.

Moscow-based programmatic support is available for grantees of the NSF Office of Polar Programs (Arctic Sciences Section) and Geosciences Directorate. Under a contract with NSF, CRDF assists with outreach and communications with the Russian research community, interactions with government agencies, travel and visa support, and on-site office support for visiting U.S. travelers and their Russian colleagues.
