On March 1-2, 2010, Pretoria, South Africa, the South African Medical Research Council, the Howard Hughes Medical Institute and the National Institute of Allergy and Infectious Diseases (NIAID) will sponsor the U.S. - Southern Africa Joint Research Forum on Tuberculosis. This forum will engage investigators from institutions with demonstrated excellence in TB and HIV/TB basic, clinical and translational research to discuss research opportunities and to explore research partnerships.
CRDF Senior Project Manager Stuart Politi will attend the forum to announce a follow-on collaborative grant competition titled "Southern Africa - U.S. Tuberculosis (TB) Research Initiative", which will be open to joint teams of researchers from the United States and Botswana, Lesotho, Mozambique, Namibia, South Africa, Swaziland, Zambia and Zimbabwe.
The CRDF Board of Directors, in conjunction with the Partnership for a Secure America (PSA) and AAAS, will host a reception on February 25, 2010 from 6:00-8:00pm in Arlington, VA to launch CRDF's 15th anniversary year and to celebrate the release of a Bipartisan Statement supporting the elevation of Science Diplomacy's role in U.S. foreign policy.

CRDF, in conjunction with Partnership for a Secure America (PSA), AAAS, and the Commonwealth Club of California, is hosting a luncheon panel discussion on the importance of Science Diplomacy's role in U.S. foreign policy on Monday, February 22, 2010 from 12:00pm-1:30pm at the Rosewood Sand Hill in Menlo Park, CA. The luncheon, featuring remarks by Sec. William Perry, Dr. David Baltimore (invited), Dr. Siegfried Hecker, and Dr. Cynthia Tuthill, coincides with the release of a bipartisan statement. The statement, signed by over two dozen prominent political and scientific leaders, urges the U.S. to utilize its scientific and technological strength to deepen international partnerships and tackle global challenges.
The U.S. Civilian Research & Development Foundation (CRDF) will lead an international panel, "The Reemergence of Science, Technology and Education as Priorities in the Arab World," of science and technology specialists at the 2010 AAAS Annual Meeting from the Arab region in a discussion of the progress that the Arab world has made, and needs to make, in order to build a knowledge society. U.S. specialists will provide case studies of how science and technology have been used to create a knowledge society in the U.S. Regional panelists will focus on the role of science in their countries and how their organizations are addressing national challenges and moving towards a knowledge society.
The USC Center on Public Diplomacy is pleased to host a conference in conjunction with the United States Institute of Peace to further academic understanding of science diplomacy as a valuable element in the wider field of public diplomacy. CRDF President and CEO Cathleen Campbell will participate in a panel discussion focused on lessons for the future of science diplomacy.
The Workshop on Sustainable Agriculture in Syria: Identifying Opportunities for Cooperation will be hosted by the University of Damascus, 5-7 January 2010, as a part of a special initiative to bring together Syrian water and agriculture researchers and their counterparts from the USA and the Middle East, to present research results, exchange best practices, and explore possibilities for future cooperative research. The Workshop on Sustainable Agriculture in Syria is being jointly organized by CRDF and the National Academy of Sciences (NAS), with the support from the Richard Lounsbery Foundation, and in collaboration with the University of Damascus, and the International Center for Agricultural Research in the Dry Areas (ICARDA), the institutional home for the Middle East Water and Livelihoods Initiative.

The U.S. Civilian Research & Development Foundation (CRDF) will host a Technology Entrepreneurship Development Workshop with the Kuwait Institute of Scientific Research (KISR) to be held at KISR's headquarters in Safat, Kuwait on December 6-10, 2009. The workshop will provide participants with an overview and core knowledge of different topics within the scope of technology entrepreneurship supplemented with current industry trends.
The purpose of the Dupont Summit will be to bring academics, government and society leaders into discussion about the development and direction of the Science & Technology agenda of the new Presidential Administration. The Dupont Summit mirrors the interest of the Policy Studies Organization and its partners in promoting discussion about many of the scientific issues that have become pressing policy problems. The aim of the Dupont Summit 2009 will be to try to assess the general strategy that the New Administration takes in regards of Science & Technology policy.

The 2009 Business Partnership Grant Competition Innovation Forums will be held in Yerevan, Armenia on December 2, 2009 and in Tbilisi, Georgia on December 4, 2009. The Innovation Forum is the concluding event of the STEP Business Partner Grant Competition where semi-finalists chosen through an expert review process have the opportunity to give presentations and "pitch" their technology commercialization plans to a group of potential investors, and an expert panel of judges. The winning proposals will receive grant funding. The Forum will also feature presentations from local and U.S. experts on venture capital, business development, and technology commercialization.
There is a growing appreciation for the need to find more areas where the US and the DPRK can build trust and mutual understanding in order to catalyze long-term peaceful relations. In the summer of 2007, after a workshop organized at CRDF, four organizations joined to form the U.S.-DPRK Scientific Engagement Consortium: AAAS, CRDF, The Korea Society, and Syracuse University - with CRDF serving as Secretariat. Collectively, the Consortium members have decades of extensive experience in successfully establishing and advancing international scientific collaborations, including with the DPRK. Consortium Members have worked to advance understanding in both the US and with the DPRK regarding the value of science diplomacy, by hosting numerous meetings in Washington, New York, Chicago, and Boston, including a number of meetings with DPRK UN Mission officials.
The Russian National Exhibition will take place November 18-21, 2009 in Chicago and is devoted to the 200th anniversary of establishing diplomatic relations between Russia and the United States.

The 2009 American Nuclear Society Winter Meeting and Nuclear Technology Expo will take place in Washington, DC from November 15-19, 2009. CRDF is arranging a national policy workshop in Saudi Arabia focused on local challenges of research and development resource allocation sponsored by King Abdullah University of Science and Technology (KAUST) and King Abdulaziz City for Science and Technology (KACST) on October 31 -November 1, 2009. The workshop entitled, "Fostering Innovation, Higher Education, Global Excellence: Models for Success in Allocation of National Research and Development Resources" is tentatively scheduled in Jeddah, Saudi Arabia and will include experts from government and academia to focus on best practices for the effective allocation of national research funds and resources.

"Emerging and Re-emerging Diseases in Central and Eastern Europe" will take place from Septemeber 20-24, 2009 in Sofia, Bulgaria. This interdisciplinary research conference, supported by the National Institute of Allergy and Infectious Diseases of the National Institutes of Health (NIH/NIAID), United States Department of Health and Human Services, will bring together regional and international scientists to discuss research opportunities related to the mosquito-borne diseases, including Chikungunya and West Nile Virus that may have increased prevalence in Europe due to environmental factors that influence the mosquito vectors.
CRDF will administer follow on grant competition for the conference funded by NIH/NIAID.

CRDF Associate Program Manager Meaza Demissie has been invited by the International Council of Associations for Science Education to attend and present at the 2009 Africa Regional Conference. This year’s conference is on the “Challenges to Sustainable Development in Africa through Science and Technology Education”. The conference is held in Abuja, Nigeria from May 24-29. A paper titled “Integrating Research and Education in Africa: Lessons from Eurasia” will be presented at this conference. This paper describes a strategy for development of research based higher education that promises not to solve Africa’s problems for it, but rather to initiate a process that will provide it the indigenous, internationally engaged experts to solve them on its own.
CRDF will celebrate the official opening of a new CREST Center for Energy Efficiency Technologies on May 13, 2009. U.S. Ambassador to Ukraine William B. Taylor has agreed to cut the ribbon on the new Center. Deputy Minister Maxim Strikha from the Ministry of Ukraine for Education and Science will also attend. CRDF President and CEO Cathleen Campbell has been invited to present at the 34th annual AAAS Forum on Science and Technology Policy, which is scheduled to be held this year on April 30-May 1, 2009 at the Ronald Reagan Building in Washington, DC. The Forum is generally acknowledged to be the major science and technology policy meeting in the U.S. and expects several hundred attendees, including government and industry officials, university faculty and administrators, diplomats, media, and others interested in public policies involving science and technology (S&T).

AfBSA is organizing a Trainer of Trainers Workshop, “Working safely and Security within BSL-2 Laboratories,” to be held at the Kenya Medical Research Institute, Kenya on March 9-13, 2009. The main objective will be to train bioscience professionals, researchers and technicians in the principles of risk assessment, diagnostics, biosafety & biosecurity and management of transgenic materials and in the regulatory framework that support them. CRDF Nonproliferation Project Manager Dmitry Soustin will travel to offer logistical assistance to six trainers as well as AfBSA staff with logistics for twenty-five participants.
CRDF and the Ministry of Education and Science will host an intensive 3-day workshop for semifinalists of the STEP Business Partnership Grant (BPG) competition in Kyiv, Ukraine from March 4-6, 2009. Participants will receive personalized training and coaching from U.S. and Ukrainian business professionals, who will help teams improve their business strategy and perfect their investor pitches.
CRDF President and CEO Cathy Campbell will participate in the 2009 U.S.-Islamic World Forum held in Doha, Qatar between Feb. 13-16. The conference -- themed "Common Challenges" -- will convene leaders in politics, business, academe, media, and civil society from the United States and the Muslim world, with the goal of encouraging dialogue and improving relations between the United States and the Muslim world. The U.S. – DPRK Scientific Engagement Consortium -- which CRDF helped to establish in 2007 and for which it serves as secretariat -- hosted a panel discussion entitled “Science for Diplomacy: Building Scientific Cooperation with North Korea,” on Friday, Feb. 13, 2009 at the AAAS Annual Meeting in Chicago. The Consortium is working to build scientific collaborations and exchanges between the U.S. and the Democratic People’s Republic of Korea (DPRK). In addition to CRDF, other Consortium members include the American Association for the Advancement of Science (AAAS), Syracuse University (SU) and The Korea Society (TKS).

CRDF will hold a PDP Technology Entrepreneurship Workshop in St. Petersburg, Russia on Nov. 17-20, 2008. The workshop is aimed at Russia-based technology entrepreneurs and will help them increase their market readiness and competitiveness in order to succeed in today’s global economy.
The American Association for the Advancement of Science (AAAS) will be hosting a conference, "Science, Diplomacy and International Cooperation," on October 28, 2008 in Washington, DC to discuss science diplomacy and raise the profile of the use of international science cooperation as a method for relationship building and engagement.

The 8th Pan-REC Conference will take place on October 20-21, 2008 in Nizhniy Novgorod, Russia. Society for Research Administration International (SRA) will host its 2008 Annual Meeting from October 9-13 at the Gaylord National Resort and Convention Center in National Harbor, MD. CRDF GO&PSS Program Manager, Heather Fernuik will be presenting "WS24: How to Manage Multi-Partner International Projects" at the conference.
The 2008 Russian Venture Forum, co-sponsored by CRDF, will take place Oct. 8-10 in St. Petersburg, Russia, and will bring together leading local and international investors and innovative high-tech business leaders. CRDF President and CEO Cathy Campbell, a member of CRDF’s Board of Directors and CRDF Treasurer Fred Johnson, and CRDF Program Manager Irina Mitchell will all be presenting at the Forum.
CRDF is among the co-organizers of an international conference on best practices in innovation policies and strategies, which will take place October 1-5 in Odessa, Ukraine. Salzburg Global Seminars, Odessa National University and the Odessa regional government are also co-organizing the conference.
This seminar will consist of two panel discussions. With support from the U.S. Department of State's BioIndustry Initiative, CRDF will sponsor the attendance of 16 scientists from the former Soviet Union at the BIO International Convention to be held June 17-20, 2008 in San Diego. Hosted by the Biotechnology Industry Organization, the convention will feature keynotes and sessions from key policymakers, scientists, CEOs, and celebrities. The convention also includes hundreds of sessions covering biotech trends, policy issues and technological innovations and the world's largest biotechnology exhibition.
The International Geodynamic Research Center (IGRC) is hosting the Fourth International Symposium dedicated to the 30th anniversary of the Research Station RAS and the 10th anniversary of IGRC. The conference, better known as the Malta-III conference, will serve to identify unique opportunities for collaboration to meet challenges for economic and social development in the region, including science education, water and the environment, medicinal chemistry, materials science, nanotechnology and solar energy. The conference will include plenary lectures by several Nobel Laureates, and workshops on the specific topics mentioned above. Almost eighty scientists from fifteen countries will be represented at the conference. CRDF Senior Program Manager, Charlie Dunlap, will be attending the conference on behalf of CRDF.

Some of Russia’s leading Russian business angels and technology entrepreneurs will be participating in the First Annual US-Russia Business Angel Symposium, a joint project of the US-Russia Chamber of Commerce of New England, the Russian Venture Capital Association, and Babson College. The Future of the Nuclear Security Environment in 2015 is an international workshop sponsored by the U.S. National Academies and the Russian Academy of Sciences. Rose Gottemoeller, CRDF Board member and Director, Carnegie Moscow Center, is serving as co-chair of the National Academies - Russian Academy of Sciences Joint Committee on the Future of the Nuclear Security Environment in 2015. CRDF Senior Vice President Eric Novotny will be serving on a panel entitled "Full Partnership – Sharing Strategic, Management and Financial Responsibilities" and making a presentation on "Cost-Sharing Arrangements in International Science and Technology Cooperation: The CRDF Experience.”
The Baltic Dynamics Conference is an initiative of the Baltic Association of Science/Technology Parks and Innovation Centres - BASTIC - and has been held annually since its inception in 1996. CRDF plans to support the travel of several U.S. researchers to Baltic Dynamics. CRDF's President & CEO, Cathleen Campbell, will participate in the fourth meeting of the U.S.-Russia Innovation Council on High Technologies on July 19-20, 2007 in Washington, DC.
The Basic Research and Higher Education (BRHE) program will hold its seventh annual program conference in Perm, Russia, on June 14-15 at Perm State University. Representatives from all 20 Research and Education Centers (RECs) will share research experiences and best practices for integrating research with university education. This will be the first Pan-REC conference for the program's four newest RECs, located in Irkutsk, Tambov, Yaroslavl, and Moscow. Featured sessions will address the role of BRHE in the development of innovative universities in Russia, and special invited lectures will recount the history of US-Russian scientific cooperation in the context of this year's 200-year anniversary of the establishment of US-Russian diplomatic relations.
